I hate modding in games.

4 Nov

I hate modding in games. Not all types of modding, but especially two types.

Modding, according to wikipedia, is “the act of modifying hardware, software, or virtually anything else, to perform a function not originally conceived or intended by the designer, or achieve a bespoke specification.

I hate modding when its cheating.

One of the best things on console gaming is that modding is a rarity. Yes, it happens, but one knows quickley who and at least on Xbox there is an option to get the cheaters banned. Its annoying to play (espeically against) someone who mods.

I hate modding when it ruins original work.

I “modded” the Mona Lisa. Arent I the genious?

Sometimes people ruin games by customizing it. Its like taking a movie and re-edit it. I am kind of skeptical to pointing this out, as first of it damages no one. But in many ways I feel that modding can ruin the game. Its hard to explain, but I see art as something…

I don´t know.

I just don´t like it, okay? Let´s say I am ambivalent to it. I do see the fun, but also I find it objectionable too. Never mind.

No, YES MIND! I just remembered one of the things that makes modding on single player annoying. It ruins the games need for unlockables. Unlockables are in-game rewards that one is given for finishing the game, or doing something in game that is difficult. Modding makes this irrelevant. One can just access the files and get it without the strife. Its like everyone gets a rewards for not doing anything. AAAAAND I DONT LIKE IT.

Here is an example that just occurred to me. I play Resident Evil Revelations 2 Raid mode. In that game one makes better parts by adding two parts together. It can take a loooooooooooong time to get the best parts and one needs patience and strategy. Now… One day I just thought “Right now someone has modded the game so that they have the best parts already. Who is the fucking fool?” I mean… In and of itself there is no harm in one person choosing the hard way and another the easy way (most modding is just tampering with a text file) but still can ruin the fun.

The main problem is cheating!!! Destroying the game for fun is not really a big concern. But when one mods the rules, even in single player, that can affect gameplay in a community. Especially when it comes to achievements. But then again getting achievements trough modding is cheating.

The sum is that modding should be a PC thing. Consoles should try to compete with PC by having strict anti-modding policies. So can cheaters go to PC and cheat each other and then we who like playing fair stay on console. But one thing that IS fun with modding is that one can make the game more to ones own liking. I wish more games had that function in the game. Options to make ones own maps, customize characters and other ways to be creative.
