The Human Centipede – First Sequence (a movie review and analysis)

2 May

The short summary with no spoilers:

This movie made me angry! What a piece of shit going ass to mouth. A rape for the eyes and a evil plot of madness.

The longer analysis with spoilers:

I borrowed this film from a friend of mine (I got a couple of thousand friends that likes to share) and I am glad I didn´t pay good money to watch it. The story goes as follows: A doctor has an aesthetic fascination with triple conjoined creatures that are connected ass-to-mouth to become a single digestive system. He then kidnaps three people, two women and one man. He then creates this abomination and enjoys the degrading results. After a while of explicit tortured and pain there is a climax where the doctor is killed, as is two of the three people he tortured. The last one living is alone crying while credits roll.

When I saw this movie I knew what I was getting into. It was a genre mix of body-horror movie and torture porn with explicit content of the worst kind. But my curiosity got the best of me so I watched it.

How do you react to this? How should you react to this?

The decision was made after I had seen the South Park episode “HUMANCENTiPAD” to understand the references in that episode and also I was wondering about this movie´s plot. A fascination of how and why they could make a movie about “the German doctor who kidnaps three tourists and joins them surgically, mouth to anus, forming a “human centipede”“. Was it the conclusion of the film or was it the main plot? The answer tuned out to be “the main plot”. After half an hour or so the film is about pain, suffering, crying, eating other peoples excrement, trying to survive, hoping for hope and a ending of despair.

Many a time during the film I wondered if I should stop, fast forward or see the whole film through. I ended up watching the entire thing as my future profession may involve far worse visual situations (although not as evil setting) and I saw it as a test. During the film I asked myself alot of questions; Who is this guy who made it? Why did he make it? Who would watch such a film (not me included)? And what´s next in artistic degradation?

When the ending came I also started to wonder about the meaning of The Human Centipede – First Sequence. Meaning, to all you nihilist out there, is the real or imagined reason for anythings existence. What was the point of making this torture porn? The first and easiest answer to this question is symptomatic; That the film was created to make money by creating a film that was vulgar and provocative to make a hype. I would guess this motive is as good as any other and probably very close, but let´s say that there are deeper meanings in this picture than capitalistic cynicism. What could that be?

The first thing I thought was that this film was anti-science. The evil antagonist in The Human Centipede is a doctor with god complex who believe that just because he can he should. This thought can be viewed in many atheist scientists nowadays [1], [2] who seems to believe that ethics just stand in the way of new knowledge (a common horror theme). It also may be about something else, but to be honest I think it is about degradation.

So why do someone want to make a film about degradation? I have friends from different parts of life, with different values and background. Some of them enjoy these kinds of films (Cannibal Holocaust, Saw, last house…etc. etc.) and their reaction to these kinds of imagery and themes fascinate me. They aren´t appalled, they do not look away, they aren´t sickened… They just laugh and enjoy it. They see great fun in those plots and themes. So I wonder… For whom are these kinds of films created? Is it the intention of the creator to make us look away, to walk out, to demand the movie destroyed? Does he want us to take a stand? Or does he want us to laugh it away, to not care either way, as long as people pay… to watch it?

I dunno.

Everybody knows it isn´t real. No one is really sewn together and forced to eat each others shit, but the idea is REAL! And to me, people should be offended. To take a stand against these fantasies and not be desensitized and relaxed about it. Perverted people shouldn´t be stoned or castrated but they should be condemned. To be told “This isn´t normal. This we do not accept.” or otherwise the next step after imagining is to realize it. One should be open minded, one should be tolerant, even of fucked up stuff… but we shouldn´t accept everything.

As I said, I do not know why this film was made, but if it had any redeeming qualities it should have been made to aggravate. But I am afraid it has failed. People who watch these movies just don´t care anymore. We have blown the fuse of moral a long time ago.

Is this the worst movie I have ever seen? No. The production value is great and the actors do an okay job. We believe that infected wounds are real and that the actors are forced to eat each others feces. The story is not bad, but the moral is far from acceptable. The main question that I stood with after the ending was; Who was this film intended for? People like me who get angry and sick or people who laugh about it and enjoys the visual imagery? I don´t have the answer. Do you?

I must say I feel quite the same about this movie: I didn’t know what to make of it. It might have to do with the fact that there wasn’t really any character (of great importance) that I could identify myself with. But that made me wonder why a director would let something like that happen. And to answer that there are two options:
    1) The director didn’t care/think about it
    2) He did it on purpose with a meaning
And since people always pick option 2 while analysing movies I’ll just do the same. In that case, the plot might also symbolise miscommunication. For example: the girls can’t talk because their mouth is attached to someones anus, the front part of the centipede is some asian guy that they don’t understand and they are in Germany while they don’t speak/understand German.
Despite the fact that I didn’t like the movie, I did like the stereotype mad scientist and his acting. Furthermore I also
liked the setting in the big house, which is totally white from the inside – like in a hospital -, and the lack of music which made it very oppresive.
Anyway, I’m glad that I’m not the only one that doesn’t knows what this movie was exactly.
